Les Manyes is the grand cru of Terroir al Límit, and unlike almost anything else in Priorat it grows not on llicorella slate but on chalk-rich clay and gypsum, at 800 metres above the monastery of Scala Dei. The variety is Garnatxa Peluda — hairy Grenache, whose downy leaves hold moisture in the heat and yield lower alcohol. Dominik Huber ferments whole-cluster and ages in concrete, having sold every barrel in his cellar. The result is pale, ethereal and floral, a wine tasters mistake for Burgundy or the Rhône. The 2016 earned a hundred points from The Wine Advocate.
Cellaring perspective
Around three thousand bottles are made in a given year. Its lightness is deceptive: the acidity and chalk beneath it carry the wine for a decade and more. Approachable young, but the finest expression comes with patience.
