Why this bottle matters
Terre de Vertus takes no dosage at all. It comes from two mid-slope parcels in Vertus, Les Barillers and Les Faucherets, facing south-east, and is bottled as a single village in a single year — and only when the harvest allows, a decision the Larmandiers take the summer after picking. Fermented in barrel and foudre with indigenous yeasts, it spends around six years on lees before disgorgement. Zero dosage leaves nothing to hide behind.
Cellaring perspective
A non-dosé Champagne with six years on lees is the most exposed thing a grower can bottle: no sugar to soften an edge, no blend to cover a weak parcel. Pierre Larmandier's position is that this is only possible when the fruit arrives ripe enough to need nothing. Wines of this construction reward patience and are unforgiving of poor storage — there is no dosage to mask a bottle that has been treated badly.
