Why this bottle matters
For years the Chardonnay from Chemin de Plivot and Chemin de Flavigny, two plots of roughly fifty-year-old vines on very chalky ground in the heart of Avize, disappeared into the Longitude blend. In 2009 Pierre and Sophie Larmandier bought a smaller press so those parcels could be pressed and vinified on their own. This cuvée is what they had been saying all along, once someone built the equipment to hear it separately.
Cellaring perspective
Fermented in a combination of large foudres and smaller Burgundy barrels, bottled with two grams of dosage, and made only in years the estate judges worth declaring. Avize is Grand Cru chalk and the wines from it tend to be built long rather than wide. This is a bottle with time in front of it rather than behind it.
