Why this bottle matters
Pierre Larmandier took over the family estate in Vertus in 1988, banned herbicides in 1992 and was fully biodynamic by 1999 — among the first in Champagne to go that far, at a time when neighbours were sceptical. Longitude is Chardonnay from four villages along the same line of the Côte des Blancs: Vertus, Oger, Avize and Cramant. Roughly 40% comes from a perpetual reserve begun in 2004, so each release carries a little of every year since.
Cellaring perspective
Larmandier-Bernier wines never take more than four grams of dosage, and the house holds that the decision is earned in the vineyard rather than made in the cellar. Vinification uses indigenous yeasts with each cru kept separate. A blanc de blancs built this way — low dosage, real reserve depth, chalk beneath all four villages — gains rather than loses over several years in bottle.
