Why this bottle matters
Guy Bocard makes eight cuvées and vinifies and ages every one of them the same way, so that the only variable left is the ground they came from. It is the closest thing in Meursault to a controlled experiment. Les Narvaux sits high on the slope above Montmélian, on stony, steep, clay-limestone soils where the fruit ripens more slowly than in the parcels below — which is the whole point of having it.
Cellaring perspective
Philippe Pacalet now advises the domaine, and the house style follows him: long pressings on whole bunches, indigenous yeasts, little bâtonnage, sparing sulphur, and barrels kept in service for more than ten vintages rather than bought new. Parcels are being replanted with massale selections from Lilian Bérillion. Upper-slope Meursault made this way tends to be tighter young and longer-lived than the richer sites.
