Weingut Peter Lauer has worked the slate of Ayl on the Saar since 1830, and Florian Lauer — the fifth generation — is the man who fought German wine law and won, restoring in 2014 the right to name the Saar's historic parcels on his labels. His house is known above all for dry and off-dry Riesling, the opposite register to his neighbour Egon Müller. This bottling, "Sonne," comes from the Sonnenberg at Biebelhausen and carries the VDP's gold capsule. A Beerenauslese is a rarity here: made only from berries wholly taken by noble rot, and only when the season allows it.
Cellaring perspective
Botrytis, acidity and sugar hold each other in tension for decades in wines like this. The half-bottle concentrates the experience without shortening the life. A wine to open in twenty or thirty years, and not before it asks.
