Why this bottle matters
This spent at least thirty-six years on its lees before disgorgement. A 1984 harvest from the Lauer family's best sites in the Saar, kept under crown cap through four decades while the region around it changed twice over. Florian Lauer runs the estate at Ayl now, and his direction is the opposite of his celebrated neighbour Egon Müller's: dry-tasting Riesling rather than residual sugar, fermented on natural yeasts and left to find its own balance.
Cellaring perspective
The Saar's signature is intensity without weight — grandeur without size — and a Sekt held this long on lees takes that in a direction very few German sparkling wines ever go, because almost nobody keeps stock that long. Once disgorged, a wine of this age is on a shorter clock than the date suggests: the lees were protecting it, and the protection has been removed. This is a bottle to open, not to store further.
