Why this bottle matters
Jane Eyre was cutting hair in Melbourne before she came to Burgundy on work experience at Domaine Chevrot in 1998 and did not leave. She studied winemaking at Charles Sturt, worked vintages at Cullen, Felton Road and Ata Rangi, spent time with Ernie Loosen in the Mosel, then Domaine des Comtes Lafon and Domaine Newman — and in 2011 began buying fruit under her own name. The Savigny premier cru of Vergelesses was the first parcel she ever bought and the cuvée she started with.
Cellaring perspective
She owns no vines: a négociant of this kind lives on the quality of the growers who will sell to her, which is why the Revue du Vin de France named her Négociant of the Year — the first woman and the first non-French winemaker to take it. From 2011 she shared a cellar with Dominique Lafon, moving into her own premises at Cissey before the 2021 harvest. Savigny is an appellation that ages better than its reputation suggests.
