Why this bottle matters
A négociant owns nothing but relationships. Jane Eyre came to Burgundy from Melbourne for work experience at Domaine Chevrot in 1998, stayed, trained at Comtes Lafon and Domaine Newman, and since 2011 has made wine entirely from fruit that growers choose to sell her. The Revue du Vin de France named her Négociant of the Year — the first woman and the first winemaker from outside France to receive it — and she was later appointed head winemaker at Domaine Comte Armand in Pommard while continuing her own label.
Cellaring perspective
The Hautes Côtes sit above and behind the Côte de Beaune, higher and cooler, and in a warming region that has stopped being the disadvantage it once was. Eyre's method does not change with the appellation: whole bunches where the fruit allows, indigenous yeasts, used oak, little handling. A wine to drink over the next few years, and a fair way to read a maker before paying premier cru prices.
