Why this bottle matters
Étienne Guigal arrived in Ampuis in 1923, aged fourteen, and worked more than sixty vintages; his son Marcel took over in 1961 when illness left his father blind. In 1995 Marcel bought the Château d'Ampuis itself — a listed monument whose oldest parts are eleventh-century — and spent eleven years restoring it under the supervision of France's chief architect of historic monuments. The wine was born the same year, drawn from parcels the house judged distinctive enough to stand apart: today seven lieux-dits, three on the Côte Blonde and four on the Côte Brune.
Cellaring perspective
Ninety-three per cent Syrah with seven per cent Viognier co-fermented, four weeks on skins, then thirty-eight months in new oak from the estate's own cooperage — the same regime as the three single-vineyard wines above it. Vines average around fifty years. New oak at that duration is obvious in youth and disappears with time, which is the argument for waiting; Côte-Rôtie built this way has decades rather than years in front of it.
