Why this bottle matters
The wine takes its name from a building. In 1995 Marcel Guigal bought the Château d'Ampuis, a listed monument on the Rhône whose oldest sections date to the eleventh century, restored it over eleven years with more than a hundred people working under France's chief architect of historic monuments, and made it the house's headquarters. The first vintage of the wine followed immediately, assembled from the lieux-dits Guigal considered distinctive enough to be kept apart — seven of them now, split between the Côte Blonde and the Côte Brune.
Cellaring perspective
In magnum, and given the same treatment as Guigal's three single-vineyard Côte-Rôties: four weeks of maceration and thirty-eight months in new oak coopered on the estate. The larger format slows the integration of that oak further still. This is a bottle to leave alone for a good while and then open at a table — not a wine that rewards being opened early to see how it is coming along.
