Why this bottle matters
Les Terrasses de l'Empire is Christine Vernay's own Condrieu, created in 1998, two years after she took over from her father Georges — the man credited with saving the appellation when its terraces were being abandoned after the war. The domaine holds ten hectares of Condrieu out of twenty-four in total, spread across Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie and Saint-Joseph, and is certified organic. The Revue du Vin de France awarded Christine Vernay its highest distinction, three stars, in its 2020 guide.
Cellaring perspective
Viognier has a reputation for being drunk within a year or two, which is partly a consequence of how most of it is made. Vernay presses whole clusters, ferments and ages in barrel, and blocks the malolactic to keep the acidity — a construction that gives a Condrieu something to stand on. This is the domaine's more approachable Condrieu rather than its most concentrated, and it can be opened sooner without apology.
