Why this bottle matters
After the war Condrieu very nearly ceased to exist. The appellation had been granted in 1940, but its terraces were too steep to work profitably and growers abandoned them for easier, more lucrative work elsewhere. Georges Vernay, who had started alongside his father Francis in 1944 at sixteen, is credited with saving it — and became the reference for the generation that followed. Les Chaillées de l'Enfer was the second Condrieu he created, in 1992, alongside the domaine's founding cuvée Coteau de Vernon.
Cellaring perspective
Christine Vernay took over from her father in 1996 and the estate is now certified organic across twenty-four hectares, seventeen of them on steep slopes. Condrieu made here is whole-cluster pressed and barrel-aged with the malolactic blocked, which is what allows a Viognier — a variety usually drunk young — to hold. The name of the site translates as the hell slopes, which is a growers' joke about the gradient rather than about the wine.
