Why this bottle matters

The Arnoux family had always grown Aligoté and once bottled it, until the grape was judged unworthy of the label and the fruit was sold off to négociants. Charles Lachaux wanted to vinify it again. He had blind-tasted d'Auvenay's Aligoté against serious premier and grand cru Chardonnays and found it holding its own, so in 2018 he founded a micro-négoce under his own name for the sole purpose of making one. Les Champs d'Argent comes from 0.6 hectares at the foot of the slope in Vosne-Romanée, on white marly soils; a quarter of the vines date from the 1930s.

Cellaring perspective

This is a separate label from Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux, which Charles has run since 2012, though the winemaking barely differs: whole clusters pressed directly, native yeasts, no new oak, vines left unhedged. The one deliberate difference is élevage — the négoce wines are bottled after a little under a year rather than eighteen months, which keeps them more openly fruited. The label was designed by his wife Louise; the rose on it is for their eldest daughter.
