Why this bottle matters
When Charles Lachaux started his micro-négoce in 2018 he intended to make only Aligoté. What happened instead is that friends who had recently taken over their own family domaines — and who hated watching their carefully farmed fruit disappear into large blends elsewhere — offered him grapes. The first release under his own name ran to five wines rather than one. Les Valozières, an Aloxe-Corton premier cru on the lower flank of the hill of Corton, belongs to that side of the label: bought fruit, chosen for how it is farmed.
Cellaring perspective
Reds here are made whole-cluster with no new oak, as at Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux, which Charles has run since 2012. The négoce wines see a shorter élevage — under a year rather than eighteen months — and are more open in their youth as a result. An Aloxe premier cru made this way sits between drinking now and keeping, and is not a bottle that needs to be forgotten for a decade.
