Why this bottle matters
Four hectares of limestone-rich clay planted in the 1960s, before clonal selection narrowed what Sangiovese could be — which is why the vines are still a mixture of old field types rather than a single chosen strain. The parcel had been part of Argiano for centuries without being bottled alone. It took a soil scientist, the Chilean Pedro Parra, mapping eight distinct terroirs across the estate after it changed hands in the early 2010s, for someone to conclude that this one should speak by itself.
Cellaring perspective
In magnum, from an estate above the Val d'Orcia whose history reaches back to the late sixteenth century and which has spent the last decade rebuilding both cellar and reputation under Bernardino Sani. Farming turned organic from 2012; the wine is raised in large casks rather than small barriques, which is the difference between framing a Sangiovese and covering it. Gambero Rosso gave the 2016 its red wine of the year. The format buys still more time.
