Why this bottle matters
Argiano's history on a rock spur above the Val d'Orcia reaches back to the late sixteenth century, and for almost all of that time nobody had mapped what lay underneath. After the estate changed hands in the early 2010s, the Chilean soil scientist Pedro Parra was brought in and identified eight distinct terroirs within it. The oldest vineyard — four hectares of limestone-rich clay planted in the 1960s, before clonal selection standardised Sangiovese, so still a mixture of old field types — became a bottling of its own: Vigna del Suolo.
Cellaring perspective
Bernardino Sani, the oenologist who has run Argiano since the change of ownership, describes what he wanted as a wine arrived at by subtraction. The estate turned to organic farming from 2012 and ages this cuvée in large oak casks rather than barriques. Gambero Rosso named the 2016 Vigna del Suolo its red wine of the year. Brunello of this construction asks for years in bottle after its legally required élevage, not months.
