Tignanello is the wine that broke Italian wine open. In 1971 Piero Antinori and the oenologist Giacomo Tachis abandoned the Chianti rulebook — no white grapes, Cabernet in the blend, ageing in small French barriques — and were forced to label the result as a humble table wine. Released in 1974, it became the first Super Tuscan and changed what Italy believed it could make. The label, designed by Silvio Coppola, still records the seventy-six thousand six hundred and eighty-two vines of the old Chianti vineyard it came from. It is bottled only in favourable years: there was no Tignanello in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1984, 1992 or 2002.
Cellaring perspective
Roughly eighty per cent Sangiovese with the two Cabernets, grown on limestone at 350 to 400 metres. Approachable earlier than Solaia, but the great vintages hold for two decades and more; older bottles are proof that the experiment aged as well as it sold.
