Solaia takes its name from the sunniest corner of the Tignanello hillside, and was born in 1978 almost by accident, from a surplus of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is Antinori's Bordeaux answer to its own Sangiovese revolution — predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc — and in 1997 it became the first Italian wine ever named number one in the world by Wine Spectator. It is bottled only in years the house considers exceptional.
Cellaring perspective
Solaia is built for the long haul: eighteen months in French oak and a further year in bottle before release, on limestone-rich marlstone soils. It drinks well young but is not finished for twenty years or more. A wine for the cellar that keeps score in decades.
