Why this bottle matters
Cumières is Pinot country, and Geoffroy is a Pinot house. Volupté is the Chardonnay argument inside it: a Blanc de Blancs from chalk outcrops on the sunny slopes above the village, in a range built on Pinot Noir and Meunier. The family has grown vines here since the seventeenth century and has held the property for close to four hundred years without a break — but the estate as a bottler is postwar, begun when Roger and Julienne Geoffroy decided to stop selling their harvest to négociants who were not paying much for it.
Cellaring perspective
The house blocks malolactic fermentation, which is what gives these wines the nerve and the ageing capacity that Cumières Champagnes are not generally known for. Volupté is fermented and raised across barrel and enamelled tank in roughly equal parts, and released Extra Brut. René Geoffroy also started a perpetual reserve in 1970 that still underpins the entry cuvées half a century later — a running record of every year since, kept in liquid.
