Messorio is one of the great Merlots of the world and the most sought wine of Bolgheri after Masseto. Eugenio Campolmi, who founded Le Macchiole and died in 2002 at forty-two, believed the coast of Tuscany could make single-variety wines of the first rank rather than Bordeaux blends — a heresy at the time. Messorio is pure Merlot, from a handful of hectares, made in tiny quantity and aged in new French oak.
Cellaring perspective
A wine of density built for the long term: expect it to close after release and to need a decade before it opens. The great vintages hold for twenty-five years and more. Its scarcity has made condition and provenance central to what a bottle is worth.
