Paleo Rosso began as a Cabernet blend and became, from 2001, one hundred per cent Cabernet Franc — a decision that seemed eccentric then and looks visionary now. It is the wine that proved Cabernet Franc could be a great variety on the Tuscan coast in its own right, not merely a seasoning, and it remains the reference for the variety in Italy.
Cellaring perspective
Cabernet Franc from Bolgheri gives structure with an aromatic lift that ages beautifully. Paleo is firm and herbal in youth, and needs ten years to soften into cedar, tobacco and graphite. A twenty-year wine in a good vintage.
