Why this bottle matters
Laherte Frères farms nine hectares split into some seventy separate parcels across ten communes around Épernay — an extreme of fragmentation even by Champagne standards, and the reason Aurélien Laherte, the seventh generation, vinifies so many plots apart. Les Empreintes is one of five single-vineyard cuvées, built from two historic sites at Chavot — Les Rouges Maisons and Les Chemins d'Épernay — read through two grapes rather than one. Part of the Chardonnay is Chardonnay Muscaté, an old aromatic mutation now rare in the region. It is not a blend of varieties so much as a reading of two neighbouring parcels.
Cellaring perspective
Farming is biodynamic or converting. Fermentation happens mostly in wood, small barrels and foudres, with only partial malolactic, and dosage is kept low — around three grams for this cuvée. Champagne assembled from two old parcels in a single village and vinified this way is closer to still white wine in construction than to a house blend, and it holds accordingly.
