The Bachelet family has grown vines around Chassagne since 1648, yet its grand cru holding is almost a rumour: one tenth of a hectare of Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, from which the 2023 yielded exactly two barrels. Brothers Benoît and Jean-Baptiste — whose father famously preferred not to receive critics — farm the ten-hectare domaine biodynamically, and 2023 is its first vintage certified organic by ECOCERT. Native yeasts, long press cycles, nearly two years on fine lees in 456-litre barrels, natural cork. Decanter placed it at 97 points; Jasper Morris at 93-96.
Cellaring perspective
Bienvenues is the grand cru of honeyed finesse rather than power, and the Bachelet whites follow a documented arc: dense and oaky in youth, then — in Jasper Morris's reading — they refine beautifully in bottle and keep very well. Give it five quiet years; the window then runs long, and two barrels means there will be no second chance at this one.
