Why this bottle matters

A step up in ripeness from Kabinett, Müller's Spätlese is among the most coveted sweet-styled Rieslings made. Scharzhofberg is the single vineyard behind the legend.

Cellaring perspective

Built to age for a generation. The balance of sweetness and Mosel acidity lets this evolve for thirty years or more — one of the great long-haul whites.

Why this Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese 2023 matters

Egon Müller’s Scharzhofberg Rieslings are among the scarcest expressions of a single vineyard anywhere in wine — production of the finest prädikats is famously limited, allocated through relationships that go back generations. Scarcity at this level attracts imitation and undocumented resale, which makes the custody question sharper here than almost anywhere. This bottle’s path from acquisition to bonded storage is recorded — which is what separates a Scharzhof in a cellar from a Scharzhof in a rumour.

The estate behind it has kept the same address since 1797, when Jean-Jacques Koch bought the Scharzhof from the French Republic; his descendants — Müllers since a daughter married Felix Müller — still farm the heart of the Scharzhofberg, some 8.5 hectares of grey Devonian slate rising steeply behind the house. The 2023 season ran warm and cool by turns, and the Spätlese caught its balance: James Suckling called it “a giant of filigree and finesse”, its natural sweetness and bright acidity already integrated, and scored it 96 — on a prädikat ladder where everything above this level is rationed through the auction room.

Common questions

Is this Egon Müller 2023 authentic and how is its provenance documented?

This Egon Müller Spätlese 2023 is held in professional bonded storage with documented custody. Its provenance is unbroken from release: the bottle has remained in professional custody, and condition is recorded. The Empty Drops is a private cellar, not a reseller, and never invents data about a bottle.

How is the bottle stored and shipped?

The bottle is kept in temperature-controlled bonded storage and is not moved unless shipping is requested. Ownership is transferred through CruTrade while the bottle remains in custody until delivery is requested.

What does the fill level and condition tell you about this bottle?

Condition is read from the fill level (ullage), capsule and label rather than taken on faith. A bottle that has not left professional custody since release avoids the usual weak points — heat, movement and broken records.
