Why this bottle matters
There are four separate Gros estates in Vosne-Romanée, all cousins, all descended from a family that has farmed the village since the 1830s. Anne Gros took over her father François's three hectares in 1988 and built the domaine to around six and a half across nine appellations. Her Clos de Vougeot parcel — 0.94 hectares of Le Grand Maupertui — sits at the top of the Clos, near the boundary with Les Grands Échézeaux, on pebbly limestone with little clay. The vines date from the beginning of the last century.
Cellaring perspective
The Clos de Vougeot is a single walled vineyard divided today among dozens of owners, which makes the position of a parcel inside the wall matter more than the appellation on the label. Upper-slope fruit from century-old vines is the part of the Clos that has always been taken seriously. Neal Martin has described these wines as meticulous to the point of appearing reserved when young — a style that asks for years rather than months.
