Why this Vega Sicilia Único 2015 matters
Vega Sicilia is Spain’s original proof that patience is a style: Único is released only when the house judges it ready, often around a decade after harvest, from a bodega that has been making wine since 1864. The producer’s own discipline sets the standard the bottle must then live up to — a wine aged ten years before release deserves better than an undocumented decade afterwards. This bottle’s storage record continues the logic the bodega started.
The 2015 also carries a quiet historical marker: it was the first vintage made by Gonzalo Iturriaga, who arrived at the house that year. The fruit ripened fast and evenly and was picked deliberately al dente — crisp and fresh — to stand against the heat of the season, then did what every Único does: nearly a decade moving between vat, barrel and old cask on the house's own clock. The years the house refused to declare — 1963, 1971, 1988, 1992, 1993, 1997, 2001 — are the guarantee behind the years it did.
