Charme is Niepoort's Burgundian argument made in the Douro: field-blend vines of seventy to more than a hundred years in Vale de Mendiz, above the Pinhão river, trodden whole-cluster in stone lagares and raised in used French oak. First made in 2000, it redefined what Douro table wine could be — Neal Martin has likened it, in Vinous, to Burgundy, and to Chambolle specifically. The 2024 comes from the Douro's return to a classic year after a run of heat: a vintage so balanced the major Port houses declared it with rare unanimity, and one that Niepoort's winemaker Nick Delaforce compared to 1960, 1970 and 2005.
Cellaring perspective
A classic-styled year with high natural acidity, in magnum — the slowest possible version of a wine already built on freshness. Charme opens young on perfume, but structure like this carries well past a decade, and the 1.5L format stretches the arc further. A wine to serve, eventually, to anyone who still believes the Douro can only make big reds.
