Riserva della Società is the wine Raffaele Pagano only bottles when the vintage deserves it: pure Aglianico from 1.2 hectares of ungrafted vines at Paternopoli, high in Irpinia, planted a century or two ago and never touched by phylloxera — trained tall and metres apart in the old starseto irpino manner. Harvest comes in early November; fermentation is spontaneous, on skins for around 25 days; and the élevage runs to roughly seven years across used casks and bottle, more than double what the Taurasi appellation demands, before some 3,500 bottles are released. Critics keep circling the same paradox — a wine of fearsome density that stays nimble, earthy and saline, in the importer RWM's phrase evoking “damp woods, cool herbs, and wild fruit.”
Cellaring perspective
Aglianico from pre-phylloxera vines is among Italy's longest-lived wines, and this one leaves the cellar with its first seven years already served. In magnum — a format the estate fills in tiny numbers — the curve stretches further still: decades, not years.
