Vigna Campo Aperto is Joaquin's single-vineyard Fiano Riserva from a plot of under a hectare in contrada Rogliano at Lapio — the village many consider the grand cru zone of Fiano di Avellino — at roughly 500 metres. Raffaele Pagano's approach is deliberately restrained: hand harvest, spontaneous fermentation, steel only, no wood anywhere, so that altitude, old vines and volcanic-clay soils do the talking. The result reads more mineral than varietal — wildflowers, apricot and fresh almond over a saline, flinty spine — a Fiano built vertical rather than broad. The 2022 was tasted by DoctorWine's Antonella Amodio in 2024; wine-searcher's aggregate places the cuvée among the region's most highly rated whites.
Cellaring perspective
Fiano is southern Italy's great ageing white, and Lapio its coolest, slowest expression: kept properly, this gains honey, smoke and hazelnut over eight to twelve years while holding its acidity. Steel-raised Riservas from sub-hectare parcels do not linger in the market — the vineyard simply cannot make enough. Patience is the whole point of the bottle.
