Méo-Camuzet is one of the great names of Vosne-Romanée, and its history runs directly through Henri Jayer, who worked the family's vines as a sharecropper for decades and taught Jean-Nicolas Méo the method he still follows. Clos de Vougeot is Burgundy's largest grand cru, fifty hectares divided among some eighty owners, and where you sit inside the walls decides everything. Près le Cellier lies in the upper part of the clos, beside the château — historically the finest section, on the thinnest, stoniest soil.
Cellaring perspective
The Clos de Vougeot from a great parcel and a great house is a twenty- to thirty-year wine. Expect it to be reticent for its first decade. Given the vineyard's fragmentation, the grower's name and the parcel matter as much here as the appellation on the label.
