Jean-Marie Fourrier is one of the most quietly influential figures in modern Gevrey-Chambertin — a vigneron who trained with Henri Jayer and Domaine Drouhin, took over the family estate at twenty-two, and has since made a virtue of doing almost nothing in the cellar: no new oak to speak of, minimal racking, long élevage on the lees. All his wines carry the words vieille vigne because he has never planted anything young. Combe aux Moine is one of Gevrey's steepest and most storied premiers crus, high on the slope, cool and stony.
Cellaring perspective
Fourrier's wines are deceptive: perfumed and open early, they close and then unfurl over fifteen years and more. This is a bottle to leave in the dark. Allocations are among the hardest to obtain in the Côte de Nuits.
