The Clos des Lambrays first appears in the archives of the Abbey of Cîteaux in 1365, which makes it one of the oldest documented vineyards in France. Behind its stone wall lie 8.84 hectares, of which Domaine des Lambrays owns 8.66 — a near-monopole matched in Burgundy only by a handful of names. Its classification history is unique: downgraded to Premier Cru in 1936 after a dispute with the then owners, it is the only vineyard on the Côte d'Or ever restored to Grand Cru, in 1981. The Clos is not one terroir but three — Les Larrets, Les Bouchots and Le Meix-Rentier — blended into a single wine. LVMH acquired the estate in 2014.
Cellaring perspective
Around thirty thousand bottles are made in a good year, and far fewer in a small one. Lambrays is famously an iron hand in a velvet glove: approachable in outline, but the great vintages need fifteen years and reward twenty-five or more.
