Alongside Rumbo al Norte, this is one of the two summits of the Comando G range: a steep, north-facing ravine of old ungrafted Garnacha in Villanueva de Ávila, terraced into pure granite at 1,100 metres, where centenary chestnut trees shade the vines. The growers call what it gives them liquid granite. The 2018 came from a cool year of late, complete ripeness — whole clusters, native yeasts, a maceration closer to infusion than extraction, fourteen months in a single 1,400-litre oak vat — and The Wine Advocate rated it 98 points, reading it as a small Rumbo al Norte, closer to Vosne than to Chambolle.
Cellaring perspective
Cool-year tension on granite is the longest-lived expression of Gredos Garnacha, and this parcel's shade-cooled fruit sharpens it further. The wine drinks on perfume already, but the stony frame is built for patience: this is a bottle to forget before it is followed.
